March:

Wine in the springtime - a rich program of events including parades of bands, other types of music, shows of agricultural machinery and the trades of days gone by, rifle shooting with antique weapons, a livestock fair, gastronomic spectacles with the distribution of rice and fritters, plus wine tasting. This wine tasting takes on particular importance due to the fact that the most popular wine of the region (il Bonarda) has been produced by these locals for over 800 years and is acclaimed by critics and casual wine drinkers alike. Alessandro Volta taught as a professor at the University of Pavia between 1778 and 1790 where he created the basis for the modern study of electricity and discovered the existence of natural gas. The city has recreated his 18th-century laboratory in detail and has dedicated many piazzas, streets and an auditorium to the great man. City: Pavia

La Grande Fiera di Pavia Sapori (the grand fair of the tastes of Pavia) - three areas meld into one for this grand occasion: agricultural foods, trade and crafts from the city of Pavia and the surrounding area. There are also traditional gastronomic evenings of typical Pavian food, organized by local restaurants, with spectacular raviolis and lavish baking. April:

May:

Madonna of the Star, a procession along the Ticino?s river to remember a famous legend associated with the Madonna of the Star, which is conserved in the church of S. Maria di Bethlehem in Borgo Ticino. A woman with a baby in her arms asked the Captains of the merchant ships anchored at Venice and bound for Pavia if they could take her and her child to Borgo Ticino. All but one refused her. The morning after, the Captain was advised by his oarsmen that they had reached Pavia without anyone aboard realizing it. The Captain thought it was a joke, but then, searching for the woman and her child, found that they had vanished. On the shore he found footprints which he followed to the church of S. Maria di Bethlehem. Here he discovered the statue of the Madonna, whose face was identical to that of the woman he had taken on board. City: Pavia

Asparagus Festival and Palio of Pigs, for more than thirty years citizens of this tiny town celebrate their most important economic staples (asparagus and pigs) with festivities, stalls, games, and music. City: Cilavegna

June:

The 'Cowboy Guest Ranch' offers rodeos that feature daredevil acrobatics with professional western riders, steer roping, Indian dances and competitions, plus one and two day programs where ordinary city folk can don boots and cowboy hats and hit the trail with trained guides. Over campfires, coffee is served in tins, and beans and steaks are cooked up in the chuck wagon. City: Voghera

Festival of Art - a two weekends devoted to 'the artists' of the area and closes down its tiny downtown to allow them to display and sell the fruits of their toils. The buildings in the center of town are decorated year-round with over 70 murals .City: Gravellona

Beer show - with 15,000 participants quaffing down over 4,500 litres of beer in 10 days, this event is becoming an event to be reckoned with. Live rock and DJs adds to the ambience as participants visit exhibitions on body piercing, body art and tattoos while local motorbike clubs compete in contests of daring and skill. City: Marcignago

The Battle of Pavia - a re-enactment of a battle fought in the year 1525 with authentic uniforms, weapons and pageantry. City: San Genesio

July

Sagra delle Lasagne, a passing out of free samples of lasagne cooked in the oven. City: Romagnese

August:

White Carnival, this festival celebrates and old legend of an ugly man and an old woman. Festivities include an imposing parade of decorated carts, dancers in costumes, ballerinas, live music, popular games, athletic competitions and demonstrations of antique crafts (such as dried chestnut beating, basket-making, knife-grinding, spinning and chair-caning). City: Santa Margherita di Staffora

Festival of the Ticino (river) ? a three week celebration about every type of palatal, visual and audible entertainment including operettas, concerts, readings, art presentations, guided tours of historical and natural wonders, food, and wine. From the last weekend of August through Sunday of the second weekend of September. City: Pavia

Saint Augustine?s day, an eight day-long festival and handicraft fair. City: Pavia

Medieval Exhibition in Castle of Belgioioso, an international event that covers a thousand years of medieval life, dress, customs and defence. Over 100 exhibitors arriving from England, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland display their elaborate clothing, weapons and furniture to the public during these two days. City: Belgioioso

September:

Mosquito Slaughter Fest, a 'National Championship Bout' features a non-specified number of contenders that, armed with only their bare hands, challenge each other to produce the most corpses during a timed, five minute, killing spree. The prize of a golden mosquito pin goes to the winning male and female who compete in separate categories. City: Valle Lomellina

Festival of the Offel, local traditional cake and wine drinking. City: Parona

Gastronomic festival based on risotto (rice) with frogs or grilled meat, and local wine. City: Pavia

Sagra e Palio dell'Oca - The goose has played an important part in the Jewish history of this little town since the middle ages. Since eating pork was forbidden to Jews, they used goose to make their salami. Geese and goose derivatives are in abundance this Sunday as are all the costumed townspeople dressed as they did in medieval times with knights, noblemen, and pages wearing traditional, authentic clothing from the late XV century. A magnificent parade recounts the frequent visits that the Duke of Milan, Ludovico il Moro, and Beatrice In the afternoon, there is a competition called 'Gioco dell'Oca' in which players dressed in Renaissance costumes move about a life-sized playing board only after archers hit a target: a bull's-eye is worth twenty points, or twenty steps on the board, and lesser hits, five and ten points. Palio (horse race) throughout the city streets. During these celebrations, the elegantly shod feet of participants step across its patterned cobblestones in a costumed pageant that is part of the Palio, a horserace held in the courtyard of the castle where the Sforzas reigned. The costumes are faithful reproductions of 15th-century. City: Vigevano

November:

Fiera del Tartufo, del Miele delle produzione agricole dell'Oltrepo Pavese - a festival dedicated to the truffle, honey and agricultural products of the towns nearby Pavia. City: Casteggio
