The Angevin castle and the port of the Cilento
Agropoli, the "gateway to the Cilento", is the largest town on the coast south of Paestum. Its name comes from the Greek "Acropolis", the high city, and refers to the old town on a promontory over the sea, which you enter through a seventeenth century gate up a staircase of wide, low steps, the "scaloni".
At the top of the promontory, the Angevin-Aragonese castle, rebuilt in the fifteenth century on Byzantine foundations, has a triangular plan with round towers and a moat; from its walls the view stretches over the gulf of Salerno to the Amalfi Coast and Capri. The lanes of the old town, with the church of the Madonna di Costantinopoli overlooking the sea, are pleasant to explore, especially in the evening. Below, the port is lively with fishing boats and the ferries that in summer connect Agropoli to the Amalfi Coast, Capri and the Cilento. The beaches of Trentova, a bay of cliffs and pine woods, are among the most beautiful in the area.
Tip: in summer the castle hosts concerts and events; Agropoli is a good base for visiting Paestum, a few kilometres north.
