A clean volcanic lake where motorboats are banned
North west of Rome, Lake Bracciano fills a vast volcanic basin, one of the cleanest lakes in Italy, because motorboats have long been forbidden on its waters and it is a drinking water reserve for Rome. It is surrounded by three villages, Bracciano, Trevignano and Anguillara Sabazia, and is part of a regional park.
Anguillara stands on a small promontory that juts into the lake, with a medieval centre of stone houses and narrow lanes that climbs to the collegiate church, from whose square the view sweeps over the water. Along the shore, beaches of dark volcanic sand, lakeside restaurants serving lake fish such as coregone and eel, and paths for walking and cycling make it a favourite weekend destination for Romans. Sailing, canoeing and windsurfing are popular.
Tip: the Museo Storico dell'Aeronautica Militare at Vigna di Valle, on the lake, displays historic seaplanes; the lake is reached by train from Rome in about an hour.
