Bay of Ieranto

A protected bay facing the Faraglioni of Capri

At the extreme tip of the Sorrento peninsula, near Nerano in the municipality of Massa Lubrense, the Bay of Ieranto is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt inlets of the Campanian coast. It is part of the Punta Campanella marine protected area and is owned and protected by the FAI, the Italian National Trust, which has restored the paths and the old buildings.

The bay, closed by Punta Penna and Punta Campanella, faces the Faraglioni of Capri, which seem within arm's reach. Its crystal clear waters and pebble beach are reached only on foot, along a path of about 3 km from Nerano through olive groves, Mediterranean scrub and old terraces, or by boat. In the past, a limestone quarry operated here; the remains of the industrial buildings can still be seen. According to legend, the sirens of the Odyssey lived on these rocks.

Tip: bring water and good shoes for the path, which has steep stretches; Nerano is famous for spaghetti alla Nerano, with fried courgettes and provolone del Monaco cheese.
