The village above Taormina and its almond wine
Above Taormina, on a rocky peak at 529 metres, Castelmola is a tiny medieval village with one of the most breathtaking views in Sicily: on one side Etna, on the other the coast of the Ionian Sea from Calabria to Syracuse, with Taormina and Isola Bella below.
The village, with stone lanes and small squares, is crowned by the ruins of a Norman castle. In the main square, Piazza Sant'Antonio, a terrace looks over the sea. Castelmola is famous for its almond wine, a sweet aperitif served in the historic Bar Turrisi, a bar known for its very unusual decorations celebrating fertility, which have made it a curious attraction.
Tip: walk up from Taormina along the old mule track, about forty-five minutes, or take the bus; the view is best on clear winter days, when Etna is covered with snow.
