The dunes and Caribbean waters of the south
On the southern coast of Sardinia, between Pula and Teulada, lies one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean, with beaches of fine sand, dunes and a sea of incredible colours. Chia, in the municipality of Domus de Maria, is a sequence of bays separated by rocky headlands: Su Giudeu, with a small islet reachable on foot across the shallow water, Sa Colonia, Campionna and Porto Campana, backed by high dunes of golden sand covered with ancient junipers, and by a coastal lagoon frequented by flamingos. On the headland stands the sixteenth century Torre di Chia, a Spanish watchtower, with a magnificent view.
A few kilometres west, in the municipality of Teulada, Tuerredda is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy: a crescent of white sand closed by two promontories covered with Mediterranean scrub, facing a sea of turquoise and emerald, with a small island in front that can be reached by swimming. The water is shallow and transparent, ideal for snorkelling. The coastal road that links Chia to Teulada, the Strada Panoramica della Costa del Sud, is one of the most spectacular in Sardinia, with views over coves, headlands and the Capo Malfatano.
Tip: in July and August the car parks fill up early, so arrive in the morning; in spring and September the beaches are almost empty.
