The city of Cima and of oenology
At the foot of the Prosecco hills, Conegliano is an elegant town of arcades and frescoed palaces, dominated by a castle on the hill, of which a tower survives, home to the civic museum, with a view over the plain and the vineyards. Its main street, the Contrada Granda, is lined with Renaissance palaces with painted façades, such as the Scuola dei Battuti, decorated with frescoes by Ludovico Pozzoserrato.
Conegliano is the birthplace of the painter Giovanni Battista Cima da Conegliano (around 1459 to 1517), one of the great masters of the Venetian Renaissance, known for his luminous Madonnas set against landscapes of his native hills. His great altarpiece of the Madonna and Child with saints is in the cathedral, and his birthplace is now a small museum. The town is also the capital of Italian oenology: here in 1876 was founded the first school of oenology in Italy, now the Istituto Cerletti, where generations of winemakers have trained, and where research on the Prosecco grape was carried out. Conegliano is the starting point of the Strada del Prosecco and the UNESCO hills.
Tip: every year the town hosts the "Dama Castellana", a game of living draughts in costume; try the local Prosecco in the wine bars of the Contrada Granda.
