The port for the Tremiti, about an hour and a half by hydrofoil
From the port of Termoli, the closest to the archipelago together with that of Vieste, ferries and hydrofoils depart for the Isole Tremiti, a small archipelago in the Adriatic, about 22 nautical miles off the coast, which administratively belongs to Apulia but is easily reached from Molise, in a journey of about an hour to an hour and a half depending on the boat. The archipelago, one of the most beautiful places in the Adriatic, consists of the islands of San Domino, the largest and greenest, covered with Aleppo pines, with coves, sea caves and the only sandy beach, Cala delle Arene, San Nicola, the historic heart, Capraia, uninhabited, and the islets of Cretaccio and Pianosa, all protected by a marine reserve with crystal-clear water.
San Nicola is dominated by the fortified Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, founded by the Benedictines in the eleventh century, a complex of walls, towers and churches that rises on the cliffs, which preserves a precious mosaic floor of the eleventh century and a Byzantine wooden crucifix. San Domino offers paths through the pine forest, coves for swimming and boat trips around the islands, to discover sea caves such as the Grotta del Bue Marino and the Grotta delle Viole, and rocks like the "Elefante". The Tremiti are also linked to the memory of the singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla, who loved them and had a house here. In summer, the islands are very popular, so it is advisable to book the crossing in advance.
Tip: book the hydrofoil in advance in summer; take the small boat tour of the sea caves as soon as you arrive.
