The Matterhorn reflected in the water
A short distance from Breuil-Cervinia, in the upper Valtournenche, at about 2,000 metres, lies the Lago Blu, a small alpine lake of glacial origin that has become one of the most photographed places in the Aosta Valley. Its water, fed by underground springs, is crystal clear and of an intense blue colour, which gives the lake its name, and is surrounded by a forest of larches and pines and by meadows. On calm days, especially in the early morning, when there is no wind, the still surface of the lake becomes a perfect mirror in which the unmistakable pyramid of the Matterhorn is reflected, creating a postcard image of rare beauty, which attracts photographers from all over the world.
The lake is very easy to reach: from the road that goes up to Cervinia, a short and flat path of a few minutes leads to its shore, which makes it ideal for families with children and for those who cannot walk long distances; there is also a path that goes around the lake. In summer, the meadows around the lake are full of flowers and are a perfect place for a picnic, while in autumn the larches turn golden, creating spectacular colour contrasts with the blue of the water and the snow of the Matterhorn. In winter, the lake freezes and is covered with snow, and the landscape becomes enchanted. From the lake, other trails lead to the hamlets and alpine pastures of the Valtournenche, among them the path to the Lago di Goillet.
Tip: go at dawn on a windless day for the perfect reflection of the Matterhorn; come back in autumn for the colours of the larches.
