The beach of the Palermitans and its Liberty-style bathing pavilion
Twenty minutes by bus from the centre, Mondello is the beach of Palermo: a wide bay of fine white sand and transparent turquoise water, between the cliffs of Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo. Once a fishing village, it became an elegant resort at the beginning of the twentieth century, when Liberty-style villas were built along the shore.
The symbol of Mondello is the Antico Stabilimento Balneare, a fanciful Art Nouveau bathing pavilion built on piles over the sea in 1913. The little square of the old village, with the fishing boats pulled up on the beach, is lined with restaurants serving fresh seafood. In summer the beach is crowded with Palermitans, especially at weekends.
Tip: the free stretches of beach are at the two ends of the bay; for a quieter swim, walk to the nature reserve of Capo Gallo or the coast of Sferracavallo.
