The Ferrari Museum

The myth of the Prancing Horse

In Maranello, a small town at the foot of the Apennines south of Modena, the name Ferrari is everywhere: here, since 1943, the factory founded by Enzo Ferrari has been located, where the most famous sports cars in the world and the Formula 1 cars of the Scuderia Ferrari, the oldest and most successful team in the history of the championship, are built. Born in Modena in 1898, Enzo Ferrari was a racing driver and then team manager for Alfa Romeo before founding his own company, which produced its first car bearing his name in 1947, with the symbol of the Prancing Horse, the "Cavallino Rampante", which had been the emblem of the First World War fighter pilot Francesco Baracca.

The Museo Ferrari, next to the factory, tells the story of the brand through an exhibition of historic and modern road cars, prototypes and above all the single-seaters that won Formula 1 world titles, with the cars of drivers such as Niki Lauda and Michael Schumacher, as well as trophies, engines and multimedia rooms. Visitors can try professional driving simulators and take a bus tour around the factory and the Fiorano test track. In Modena, the Museo Enzo Ferrari houses the founder's birthplace and his father's workshop, next to a futuristic pavilion with a yellow aluminium roof shaped like a car bonnet, designed by the architect Jan Kaplický. The area is the "Motor Valley", also home to Lamborghini, Maserati, Ducati and Pagani.

Tip: a combined ticket covers both Ferrari museums, linked by a shuttle bus; book the simulator and the factory tour in advance.
