A baroque town and the Greek theatre of Akrai on the Hyblaean plateau
Palazzolo Acreide, on the Hyblaean plateau inland from Syracuse, is one of the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto listed by UNESCO, with splendid churches such as San Sebastiano and San Paolo, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, and the palaces of the old aristocracy.
Above the town lies the archaeological area of Akrai, the first colony founded by Syracuse in 664 BC. Its small Greek theatre, well preserved, faces the Hyblaean mountains, and nearby are the latomie, ancient quarries turned into burial places, and the "Santoni", twelve rock-cut reliefs of the goddess Cybele, unique in the Greek world. The Antonino Uccello House Museum displays the peasant culture of the area, with tools, puppets and nativity scenes.
Tip: in summer the Greek theatre hosts the festival of classical drama by students; Palazzolo is known for its sausage and its traditional lemon granita.
