Peschici

The white village perched over the sea of the Gargano

On the northern coast of the Gargano, Peschici is one of the most picturesque villages in Apulia and one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia": a cluster of white houses with flat roofs and small domes, of almost oriental appearance, perched on a high limestone cliff that drops vertically into the sea. Its name may derive from the Slavic word "pesk", sand, after the settlers from Dalmatia who arrived here in the tenth century.

The old town, enclosed by walls and dominated by the remains of a castle, is a maze of narrow, steep lanes, arches and stairways, which suddenly open onto viewpoints over the bay and the sea. Below the village stretches a wide bay of fine sand, with clear water, and the coast towards Vieste is dotted with beaches, coves and pine forests, such as the Baia di Manaccora and Zaiana. On the headlands stand several trabucchi, the ancient wooden fishing machines of the Gargano, consisting of a platform anchored to the rock with long arms holding a large net; some have been restored and can be visited, and a few have become restaurants. In summer the village hosts music festivals and events.

Tip: from the port of Peschici boats leave for the Tremiti Islands in summer; the sunset from the walls of the old town is magical.
