The Tibetan Bridge of Castelsaraceno

One of the longest Tibetan bridges in the world, suspended over the valley

In the heart of the Pollino National Park, in the province of Potenza, the small mountain village of Castelsaraceno has become famous for an extraordinary attraction: the Ponte Tibetano, opened in 2021, which at the time of its inauguration was presented as the longest Tibetan bridge in the world, with a length of about 586 metres. Suspended at a height of about 80 metres above the valley of the Racanello stream, it connects the slopes of the Pollino and Appennino Lucano parks, offering an unforgettable experience to those who walk on its narrow walkway of steel planks and cables, which sways slightly with every step and in the wind, with the void below and the panorama of woods, peaks and gorges all around.

The crossing takes about an hour, round trip, and takes place with a harness attached to a safety cable, accompanied by expert guides; it is not technically difficult, but requires a little courage and is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo. Tickets must be booked, and the bridge is open from spring to autumn, weather permitting. The village of Castelsaraceno, at about 900 metres, with its stone houses and the ruins of a medieval castle, offers a pleasant stop, and the surrounding area, between the Pollino and the Monte Alpi, is crossed by hiking trails and is one of the wildest areas of Basilicata. In the area, there are also other Tibetan bridges and adventure activities, such as zip lines and via ferratas.

Tip: book your crossing online in advance; go on a clear, windless day for the best experience.
