The thermal baths facing Mont Blanc
A few kilometres from Courmayeur, at the foot of Mont Blanc, in the upper Aosta Valley, the village of Pré-Saint-Didier is known for its thermal waters, which spring from the rock at a temperature of about 37 °C, rich in iron and other minerals. Their properties were already known in ancient times, and from the nineteenth century the village became a fashionable spa for the aristocracy and the royal family of Savoy, with an elegant Thermal Establishment built in 1838. Today, after a careful restoration, the historic building and new spaces host one of the most famous wellness centres in the Alps, with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam baths, waterfalls, hydromassage pools and relaxation rooms with fireplaces.
The most extraordinary experience is to immerse yourself in the outdoor thermal pools, with water at about 37 °C, while the snow falls around you in winter, or at sunset in summer, facing the glaciers and the peaks of the Mont Blanc massif, which seem close enough to touch: a unique emotion. The baths are particularly popular after a day of skiing in Courmayeur or La Thuile. Near the village, a path leads to the Orrido di Pré-Saint-Didier, a deep gorge carved by the Dora di Verney stream, which can be admired from a spectacular panoramic platform suspended over the void, with a glass floor, about 150 metres above the water. From Pré-Saint-Didier, the road climbs to La Thuile and the Little St Bernard Pass, on the border with France.
Tip: book the baths in advance, especially at weekends; go in the evening for the outdoor pools under the stars facing Mont Blanc.
