Canyons and waterfalls in the heart of the Presila
In the Presila of Catanzaro, the hilly and mountainous area that rises from the Ionian coast towards the Sila, in the territory of Sersale, lies the Riserva Naturale Regionale delle Valli Cupe, one of the most surprising and still little-known natural areas of Calabria. Over thousands of years, the streams have carved a landscape of deep canyons with smooth, high walls, gorges, rock formations of strange shapes and numerous waterfalls, immersed in a lush vegetation of holm oaks, chestnuts, ferns and moss, which in some places creates an almost tropical atmosphere. The name "Valli Cupe" means "dark valleys", for the gloom of these narrow gorges.
The best-known place in the reserve is the Canyon of the Valli Cupe, a narrow gorge with walls tens of metres high, which can be crossed on foot in the stream bed, among pools and rocks, with the light filtering from above. Among the many waterfalls, the most spectacular is the Cascata del Campanaro, among the highest in Calabria, but there are many others, reached by paths through the woods. The reserve also preserves monumental trees, centuries-old giants such as chestnuts and oaks, and curious monoliths of conglomerate rock. Excursions are organised by local guides and associations, who also accompany visitors to discover the ancient mills, the rural churches and the traditions of the area.
Tip: go with a local guide, especially for the canyon; wear shoes suitable for walking in water and avoid days after heavy rain.
