Rovigo and Palazzo Roverella

The great exhibitions of the Polesine

Rovigo is the capital of the Polesine, the flat land between the lower courses of the Adige and the Po, a landscape of fields, canals and poplars, reclaimed over the centuries from marshes and floods, including the disastrous one of 1951. Little visited by tourists, the city has an unexpected cultural life and some precious monuments.

At its heart, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is surrounded by palaces with arcades and a column with the Lion of St Mark. On the square stands the Accademia dei Concordi, founded in 1580, with its rich library and art gallery of Venetian painting, with works by Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Tiepolo and Rosalba Carriera. Next to it, Palazzo Roverella, a fifteenth century Renaissance palace, has become one of the most important exhibition centres in north eastern Italy, hosting every year great exhibitions of nineteenth and twentieth century art, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, the Impressionists and photography, which attract visitors from all over Italy. Rovigo also has the Tempio della Beata Vergine del Soccorso, known as "La Rotonda", an octagonal church of 1594 entirely decorated inside with paintings, and the two medieval towers of the Donà castle.

Tip: check the programme of exhibitions at Palazzo Roverella; Rovigo is a good base for exploring the Po Delta park.
