The palm-lined seafront
At the southern end of the Marche coast, near the border with Abruzzo, San Benedetto del Tronto is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic and the heart of the Riviera delle Palme, the Riviera of Palms, named after the thousands of palm trees, about eight thousand, together with oleanders and flowers, that line its long seafront promenade, several kilometres long, divided into gardens, cycle paths, fountains and sculptures, one of the most beautiful promenades in Italy. Its wide sandy beaches, equipped with bathing establishments, and the shallow, calm sea make it ideal for families.
San Benedetto is also one of the most important fishing ports on the Adriatic, with a large fleet of fishing boats, and the sea has shaped its history and culture: in the Museo del Mare, a museum complex at the port, the Museo Ittico, with a collection of fish and marine creatures of the Adriatic, the museum of amphorae and the museum of seafaring civilisation tell the story of the sea and fishing. Along the harbour, the Molo Sud, a long pier, is home to an open-air gallery of sculptures made by artists from all over the world. The typical dish of the town is the "brodetto alla sambenedettese", a fish soup made with different types of fish, green peppers, green tomatoes and vinegar, according to an ancient fishermen's recipe. In the old upper town, the "Paese Alto", stands the Torrione, a fifteenth century tower, the symbol of the city. South of the town, the Sentina Nature Reserve protects a stretch of wild coast with dunes and wetlands.
Tip: walk or cycle the whole seafront at sunset; taste the brodetto alla sambenedettese in the restaurants of the port.
