The Liberty casino and the spa
In the Val Brembana, north of Bergamo, San Pellegrino Terme gave its name to one of the most famous mineral waters in the world, exported to over 150 countries in its green bottles with the red star. Its springs were already known in the Middle Ages, but it was at the turn of the twentieth century that the town became one of the most elegant spa resorts in Europe, frequented by the Italian and international aristocracy.
From that Belle Époque come the town's spectacular Liberty (Art Nouveau) buildings, along the Brembo river: the Casinò Municipale, inaugurated in 1907, with a richly decorated façade, a monumental staircase and halls of stucco, stained glass and gilding; the Grand Hotel, with its long façade on the river; and the old spa, the Terme. The original thermal baths have been replaced by a modern spa (QC Terme San Pellegrino), with pools, saunas and treatments in a historic building. A funicular of 1909, restored, climbs from the town to the Vetta, with a view over the valley.
Tip: the casino can be visited with guided tours; nearby, the medieval village of Cornello dei Tasso, home of the family that founded the European postal service, is worth a visit.
