The most photographed ridge in the Dolomites
Above Ortisei, in the Puez-Odle Natural Park, part of the Dolomites UNESCO site, the Seceda, at about 2,500 metres, offers one of the most extraordinary and photographed views of the Dolomites. From its summit, the green meadows of the mountain rise gently towards the north, and then end abruptly in a sharp crest that plunges vertically on the other side, while beyond the edge the jagged peaks of the Odle (Geisler), a series of dark pinnacles and needles of rock, rise like the teeth of a saw. On the other side, the view sweeps over the Sassolungo, the Sella, the Marmolada and dozens of other peaks of the Dolomites, an unforgettable 360-degree panorama.
The Seceda can be reached easily from Ortisei with a cable car in two sections, via Furnes, and from the arrival point, a short walk leads to the summit cross and the famous viewpoint over the Odle ridge. From here, numerous paths descend through the meadows of the Alpe di Cisles and Fermeda, dotted with huts and hay barns, to Santa Cristina and the Col Raiser, or towards the Rifugio Firenze (Regensburger Hütte), offering easy, scenic hikes of a few hours. In recent years, the fame of the Seceda on social networks has attracted huge crowds, especially in summer, and the local authorities and landowners have discussed measures to limit and regulate access to the most crowded paths. In winter, the Seceda is part of the Val Gardena ski area, with one of the longest slopes in the valley, the "La Longia", about ten kilometres long.
Tip: take the first cable car in the morning to avoid crowds; the sunset light on the Odle is magical, but check the time of the last descent.
