Things to see in Arezzo
Piero della Francesca and the antiques fair
Arezzo, in eastern Tuscany, is an ancient Etruscan city with a superb medieval centre on a hill. It is the city of Piero della Francesca's frescoes, of Petrarch and Vasari, and of the most famous antiques fair in Italy.
What to see
In the basilica of San Francesco, Piero della Francesca's Legend of the True Cross is one of the great fresco cycles of the Renaissance. Piazza Grande, sloping and irregular, is framed by the Loggia of Vasari and the apse of the Pieve di Santa Maria: here the Giostra del Saracino joust is held in June and September, and the antiques fair fills the streets on the first weekend of every month. The cathedral, Cimabue's Crucifix in San Domenico and the Medici fortress complete the visit.
Food
Pici, ribollita, Chianina beef, grifi all'aretina and the wines of the Valdichiana and the Casentino.
Around Arezzo
Cortona above the Valdichiana, Anghiari and Sansepolcro, Piero's hometown, the Casentino with Poppi castle and the monasteries of La Verna and Camaldoli, and Montepulciano. Florence airport is about an hour away.
