The city of travertine
Ascoli Piceno, in the far south of the Marche, is built almost entirely of travertine, a warm, pale stone that makes its squares glow at sunset. Surrounded by two rivers and the mountains, it is a city of a hundred towers.
What to see
Piazza del Popolo is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, paved in travertine and closed by the Palazzo dei Capitani and the church of San Francesco. Here the historic Caffè Meletti, an Art Nouveau café, serves the local anise liqueur. Piazza Arringo, with the cathedral and the baptistery, hosts the picture gallery with works by Carlo Crivelli. The Roman bridge of Solestà, the medieval towers and the Quintana jousting tournament in summer complete the experience.
Food
Olive all'ascolana, giant green olives stuffed with meat and fried, fritto misto, anisetta Meletti and the Rosso Piceno Superiore and Pecorino wines.
