What to see
In the upper town, Piazza Vecchia is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, with the Palazzo della Ragione and the Campanone tower. Behind it stand the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the colourful Colleoni Chapel. Walk along the walls, take the second funicular up to San Vigilio for the view and, in the lower town, visit the Accademia Carrara, one of Italy's great picture galleries.
Food
Casoncelli pasta, polenta with everything, strong cheeses like Taleggio and Branzi, and the sweet "polenta e osei".
