Things to see in Biella
Wool, mountains and a sanctuary
Biella, at the foot of the Alps between Turin and Milan, is the Italian capital of fine wool: some of the most prestigious fabric mills in the world are here. It has been a UNESCO Creative City for crafts since 2019.
What to see
The town is in two parts. The upper town, Biella Piazzo, reached by a small funicular, is a medieval village of arcades and noble palaces. Below, the Romanesque Baptistery, the cathedral and the cloister of San Sebastiano with the city museum stand in Biella Piano. The former mills along the Cervo river, such as the Lanificio Sella, now host Cittadellarte by Michelangelo Pistoletto and other cultural spaces.
Food
Polenta concia, rich with butter and cheese, Toma and Maccagno cheeses, and the local Menabrea beer.
Around Biella
The Sanctuary of Oropa, a vast mountain shrine and part of the UNESCO Sacred Mountains, the Panoramica Zegna road through rhododendron woods, the Burcina park and the Bessa gold mining area. Turin and Milan Malpensa airports are about an hour away.
