The end of the Appian Way
Brindisi, with one of the finest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, was for centuries Rome's gateway to the East: the Via Appia ended here. Today it is a relaxed port city and the arrival point for many visitors to Salento and the Valle d'Itria.
What to see
The Roman column at the top of the steps on the seafront marks the end of the Appian Way. The Lungomare Regina Margherita looks across the harbour to the Monument to the Sailor, reachable by a short boat ride. The Swabian castle, the cathedral, the Ribezzo archaeological museum, with Greek and Roman bronzes recovered from the sea, and the Templar church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro complete the centre.
Food
Orecchiette, fish soups, purée of fava beans with chicory, frise and the wines Negroamaro and Primitivo.
