Things to see in Campobasso
The quiet capital of Molise
Campobasso, the capital of Molise, is a small, welcoming city at 700 metres, made of an old upper town clustered around a castle and a modern lower town with elegant 19th-century streets.
What to see
The Castello Monforte, built by the Normans and rebuilt in the 15th century, dominates the city with views over the hills. In the old town, Romanesque churches such as San Giorgio and San Bartolomeo line the steep lanes. In June the Corpus Domini procession of the Misteri, living tableaux carried through the streets on iron structures, is unique in Italy, and the Samnite Museum tells the story of the region's ancient people.
Food
Cavatelli, scamorza and caciocavallo cheeses, sausages and Tintilia, the native red wine of Molise.
