Silk city on the lake
Como sits at the southern tip of Lake Como, between mountains and water. Famous for its silk industry and as the birthplace of Alessandro Volta, it is the gateway to one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
What to see
The cathedral, a mix of Gothic and Renaissance, stands next to the Broletto in the heart of the walled town. Walk along the lakefront promenade to Villa Olmo and the Tempio Voltiano, dedicated to the inventor of the battery. Take the funicular to Brunate for the view over the lake and the Alps, and visit the Silk Museum. The Casa del Fascio by Terragni is a masterpiece of Italian rationalism.
Food
Lake fish such as missoltini (dried shad) and perch risotto, polenta and the cheeses of the valleys.
