Capital of the Tavoliere
Foggia is the main city of the Tavoliere, the vast wheat plain of northern Puglia, often called the granary of Italy. It is the natural gateway to the Gargano promontory and its beaches, forests and sanctuaries.
What to see
The cathedral, Romanesque below and baroque above, keeps the icon of the Madonna dei Sette Veli. The arch of the palace of Frederick II, who loved this land, survives in the centre. The civic museum, the Giordano theatre, named after the composer born here, and the Villa Comunale park complete a short visit. Foggia is above all the starting point for exploring the province.
Food
Orecchiette and troccoli pasta, the pancotto of bread and vegetables, cardoncelli mushrooms, Canestrato pugliese cheese and the Nero di Troia red wine.
