Olive oil on the Riviera of Flowers

Imperia, on the western Riviera, was created in 1923 by joining two rival towns, Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, divided by the Impero stream. It is the Italian capital of olive oil from the small Taggiasca olive.

What to see

Porto Maurizio sits on a promontory: its old quarter, the Parasio, is a maze of alleys and steps leading to loggias with sea views, and the huge neoclassical basilica of San Maurizio. Oneglia is a working town with arcaded streets, the harbour of the fishing boats and the Calata Cuneo, lined with restaurants. The Olive Tree Museum tells the story of the oil, and the Naval Museum looks at the sea.

Food

Taggiasca olives and oil, pesto, sardenaira, a pizza with anchovies, focaccia, stuffed vegetables and the wine Ormeasco.
