Prehistory in the heart of Molise
Isernia, in the green mountains of Molise, is one of the oldest inhabited places in Europe: the Paleolithic site of La Pineta, about 600,000 years old, revealed some of the earliest traces of human use of fire.
What to see
The Paleolithic Museum of La Pineta displays the excavated living floor with animal bones and stone tools. In the old town, built on a ridge, the Fontana Fraterna, a thirteenth century fountain made from Roman stones, is the symbol of the city. The cathedral stands on the podium of a Roman temple, and the arch of San Pietro and the Santa Maria delle Monache museum complete the walk.
Food
Caciocavallo and scamorza, sausages and soppressata, lamb, the white truffle of Molise and the red wine Tintilia.
