A new town on reclaimed land

Latina was founded in 1932 as Littoria, after the draining of the Pontine Marshes, one of the largest land reclamation projects in Europe. Its centre is an open air museum of rationalist architecture, and the coast nearby is among the most beautiful in Lazio.

What to see

Piazza del Popolo, with the town hall and its tower, and Piazza della Libertà show the geometric layout of the 1930s new towns. The cathedral of San Marco, the Cambellotti museum and the Palazzo M are worth a look. The real treasures, however, are all around: the Circeo National Park, with its forest, coastal lakes and the promontory of the sorceress Circe, and the long beach of Latina Lido.

Food

Buffalo mozzarella, Sezze artichokes, Gaeta olives, Fondi fish and vegetables and the kiwis of the Agro Pontino, one of the largest producers in the world.

Around Latina

The Gardens of Ninfa, among the most romantic in the world, medieval Sermoneta, Sabaudia and its dunes, San Felice Circeo, Sperlonga, Terracina with its Temple of Jupiter, Gaeta and ferries to Ponza and Ventotene. Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino are about an hour away.
