Marble mountains and the sea
Massa lies between the Apuan Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the land of the white marble that Michelangelo chose for his sculptures. With Carrara it forms the province of Massa-Carrara.
What to see
The Malaspina Castle, on a rock above the town, combines a medieval fortress and a Renaissance residence with views to the sea. In the centre, Piazza Aranci, with its orange trees and obelisk, faces the red Palazzo Ducale of the Cybo Malaspina. The cathedral has a white marble façade. A few kilometres away, the beaches of Marina di Massa are wide and sandy, backed by pine woods.
Food
Lardo di Colonnata, aged in marble basins, testaroli of the Lunigiana with pesto, torta d'erbi and the Candia dei Colli Apuani wine.
Around Massa
The marble quarries of Carrara and the village of Colonnata, Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta and its sculptors, the Lunigiana castles with Pontremoli and Fivizzano, and the Apuan Alps park. Pisa airport is 45 minutes away.
