Baroque reborn after the earthquake
Ragusa, in the south east of Sicily, was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 in two parts: the new upper town and Ragusa Ibla, the old town rebuilt on its medieval plan. With the other late baroque towns of the Val di Noto, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What to see
Ragusa Ibla is a dream of honey-coloured stone: the cathedral of San Giorgio by Rosario Gagliardi, with its high dome, rises at the top of a sloping square. Wander through the lanes to the Giardino Ibleo, the church of San Giuseppe and the noble palaces with grotesque balcony supports. From the upper town, the staircases of Santa Maria delle Scale offer the classic view of Ibla. Fans of Inspector Montalbano will recognise many locations here and in the nearby towns.
Food
Ragusano cheese, scacce, folded flatbreads with tomato and cheese, ravioli with ricotta and pork sauce, the chocolate of Modica and the Cerasuolo di Vittoria wine.
Around Ragusa
Modica, Scicli and Noto, the other baroque jewels, Ispica and its quarry caves, the beaches of Marina di Ragusa and Santa Croce Camerina, Chiaramonte Gulfi and Pozzallo, with ferries to Malta. Comiso airport is 20 minutes away, Catania about 1 hour 30.
