The Riace Bronzes and the Strait
Reggio Calabria, at the tip of the Italian boot, faces Sicily across the Strait of Messina. Founded by Greek colonists, it is home to two of the most famous statues of the ancient world, and its seafront has been called "the most beautiful kilometre in Italy".
What to see
The National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia displays the Riace Bronzes, two Greek warriors of the fifth century BC recovered from the sea in 1972. The Lungomare Falcomatà, lined with palms and magnolias, looks straight at Etna and Sicily: on clear summer days the Fata Morgana mirage can sometimes be seen. The Aragonese castle, the cathedral and the remains of the Greek walls complete the visit.
Food
Bergamot, grown almost only here, swordfish from the Strait, 'nduja, stocco (dried cod) and the ice cream and granita of the seafront.
Around Reggio Calabria
Scilla and its fishing quarter of Chianalea, Palmi and the Costa Viola, the Aspromonte National Park, the Greek-speaking village of Bova, Gerace, Stilo and its Byzantine church and the ferries to Messina. Reggio has its own airport, Tito Minniti, 5 km from the centre.
