Things to see in Sassari

The second city of Sardinia

Sassari, in the north west of Sardinia, is the island's second city: a university town with a lively old centre, elegant nineteenth century squares and a strong identity, between the Alghero coast and the Gulf of Asinara.

What to see

Piazza d'Italia, one of the largest squares in Italy, is framed by the neo-Gothic Palazzo della Provincia. The cathedral of San Nicola has a spectacular baroque façade. The Fontana di Rosello, a Renaissance fountain, is the symbol of the city. The Sanna National Museum has one of the best collections of nuragic bronzes. In May the Cavalcata Sarda parades costumes from all over the island, and in August the Discesa dei Candelieri, giant wooden candlesticks carried through the streets, is UNESCO intangible heritage.

Food

Fainè, a chickpea flatbread brought by the Genoese, snails, zuppa di cozze, the pastries called papassini and the Cannonau and Vermentino wines.

Around Sassari

Alghero and Capo Caccia, Stintino and the La Pelosa beach, the Asinara National Park, Castelsardo on its rock, Porto Torres and the Romanesque churches of the Logudoro, such as Saccargia. Alghero airport is 30 minutes away.
