Why visit

Piazza del Campo and the Palio. Discover Tuscany

A Gothic jewel in the heart of Tuscany

Siena is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe, built on three hills in brick and stone. Its historic centre is a UNESCO site and its life still revolves around the seventeen contrade, the city districts that compete in the Palio.

What to see

Piazza del Campo, shaped like a shell, slopes down to the Palazzo Pubblico and the slender Torre del Mangia; inside, the Civic Museum holds Lorenzetti's frescoes of Good and Bad Government. The cathedral, striped in black and white marble, has a unique inlaid floor and the Piccolomini Library. Don't miss the Santa Maria della Scala complex and the panorama from the Facciatone.

The Palio

Twice a year, on 2 July and 16 August, ten contrade race bareback horses around Piazza del Campo in a breathtaking, passionate contest that the whole city lives for.

Food

Pici pasta, ribollita, wild boar, pecorino and sweets like panforte and ricciarelli, with Chianti Classico and Brunello wines.

Around Siena

Chianti, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, the Val d'Orcia with Pienza and Montalcino. The nearest airports are Florence and Pisa.
