Salt, sea and Erice
Trapani lies on a narrow sickle-shaped peninsula at the western tip of Sicily, between the Tyrrhenian and the Mediterranean. It is a city of baroque churches, salt pans and windmills, and the departure point for the Egadi Islands.
What to see
The old town, stretched along the peninsula, has Via Garibaldi and Corso Vittorio Emanuele, lined with baroque palaces and churches such as the cathedral and the Collegio dei Gesuiti. The Church of the Purgatory keeps the Misteri, the wooden groups carried in the 24-hour Good Friday procession. The Torre di Ligny sits at the far end of the peninsula. South of the city, the salt pans of Trapani and Paceco, with their windmills, are a nature reserve, beautiful at sunset.
Food
Busiate pasta with pesto alla trapanese, made with tomatoes and almonds, fish couscous, tuna and the Marsala wine.
