Habsburg port on the Adriatic
Trieste was for centuries the main port of the Austrian Empire, and it still feels like a Central European city by the sea: grand neoclassical buildings, literary cafés where James Joyce and Italo Svevo wrote, and a mix of Italian, Slovenian and Austrian traditions.
What to see
Piazza Unità d'Italia, one of the largest squares in Europe facing the sea, is the heart of the city. Walk along the Molo Audace pier, climb to the hill of San Giusto with its cathedral and castle, see the Roman theatre and the Grand Canal of the Borgo Teresiano. Just outside the centre, the white Miramare Castle stands on the sea surrounded by a park.
Food
Coffee culture is strong here: Trieste is Italy's coffee port. Try the buffets with boiled pork and sauerkraut, jota soup, presnitz pastries and the wines of the Carso.
Around Trieste
The Carso plateau with the Giant Cave, the coastal path of Rilke, Duino castle and Aquileia. Trieste airport is 30 km away, with trains to Venice.
