Things to see in Udine

The heart of Friuli

Udine, at the foot of its castle hill, is the historic capital of Friuli: a city of Venetian squares, wine bars and the art of Giambattista Tiepolo, halfway between the Alps and the Adriatic.

What to see

Piazza della Libertà is often called the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland, with the pink and white Loggia del Lionello, the clock tower and the Loggia di San Giovanni. Climb to the castle, home to the civic museums, for the view. In the cathedral, the Oratorio della Purità and above all the Palazzo Patriarcale you can see Tiepolo's luminous frescoes. Piazza Matteotti, with its arcades and fountain, is the living room of the city.

Food

Frico, a crisp cake of cheese and potatoes, San Daniele ham, Montasio cheese, cjarsons ravioli and a "tajut", the glass of wine shared in the osterie.

Around Udine

Cividale del Friuli with its Lombard temple, the star-shaped fortress town of Palmanova, Aquileia and its Roman mosaics, Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro on the sea and the Carnic Alps. Trieste airport is 40 minutes away.
