Things to see in Vercelli
The capital of European rice
Vercelli is surrounded by the largest rice-growing area in Europe: in April and May the flooded fields turn the plain into a "sea in a chessboard". The city is an ancient religious and cultural centre.
What to see
The Basilica of Sant'Andrea, built in the early thirteenth century, is one of the first Gothic churches in Italy, with a beautiful cloister. The cathedral treasury keeps the Vercelli Book, one of the oldest manuscripts in Old English. Piazza Cavour, the Borgogna Museum with its Renaissance paintings and the Arca exhibition space in San Marco complete the centre.
Food
Panissa, the risotto with beans and salame d'la duja, frogs, and the bicciolani spiced biscuits.
Around Vercelli
The rice paddies, the Principato di Lucedio abbey estate, the Sacro Monte of Varallo, a UNESCO site, the Valsesia towards Monte Rosa and Novara. Milan Malpensa and Turin airports are about an hour away.
