Things to see in Vicenza
The city of Palladio
Vicenza is the city of Andrea Palladio, the Renaissance architect whose classical villas and palaces inspired buildings all over the world, from England to the White House. The city and the Palladian villas of the Veneto are a UNESCO site.
What to see
The Basilica Palladiana dominates Piazza dei Signori with its white marble loggias. The Teatro Olimpico, Palladio's last work, is the oldest covered theatre in the world, with a stage set of streets in false perspective. Corso Palladio is lined with palaces, and just outside the centre stand Villa La Rotonda, perhaps the most imitated house in history, and Villa Valmarana ai Nani with Tiepolo frescoes. Climb to the sanctuary of Monte Berico for the view.
Food
Baccalà alla vicentina, slow-cooked salt cod served with polenta, Asiago cheese and Bassano white asparagus in spring.
Around Vicenza
Bassano del Grappa with its wooden bridge, walled Marostica with its living chess game, the Asiago plateau and Padua and Verona by train. Venice and Verona airports are both about an hour away.
