Cyclopean walls of enormous blocks around an ancient citadel
Alatri, in the Ciociaria, is one of the "Saturnian cities" that, according to legend, were founded by the god Saturn. Its most impressive monument is the acropolis, the ancient citadel on the top of the hill, enclosed by polygonal walls made of huge limestone blocks, fitted together without mortar with astonishing precision, perhaps in the fourth century BC by the Hernici people.
The walls, called Cyclopean because it seemed only the giant Cyclopes could have moved such stones, are about two kilometres long and still reach several metres in height. The main gate, the Porta Maggiore, has an enormous lintel over five metres long. Inside the acropolis stands the cathedral of San Paolo. In the town, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the medieval houses complete the visit.
Tip: in the cathedral is kept the Host of the Eucharistic miracle of 1228; walk around the walls to appreciate the size of the blocks. Alatri hosts an international folk festival in summer.
