A waterfall in the middle of a town, beside a ducal castle
Isola del Liri, in the Ciociaria, is one of the few towns in Europe to have a waterfall in the middle of the historic centre. The Liri river divides into two branches around the old town, forming an island, and one of them plunges about 27 metres right next to the main street, in a curtain of white foam that can be admired from the bridge and the square.
The Cascata Grande is flanked by the Castello Boncompagni-Viscogliosi, a ducal residence built over a medieval fortress, which seems to rise from the water. The second branch forms the smaller Cascata del Valcatoio. The power of the water made Isola del Liri an important industrial centre for paper and wool from the nineteenth century, and old factories still line the river.
Tip: the waterfall is illuminated at night; the nearby town of Arpino, birthplace of Cicero, with its acropolis and Cyclopean walls, is worth a visit.
