The village of the battle painted by Leonardo
Anghiari is a fortified village on a spur above the upper Tiber valley, one of the most beautiful in Italy. From its top, a dead-straight road nearly eight kilometres long descends to Sansepolcro across the plain where, on 29 June 1440, Florence defeated Milan in the Battle of Anghiari.
Florence commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to paint the battle in Palazzo Vecchio; the mural was lost, but copies of the furious fight for the standard still exist, and the Museo della Battaglia e di Anghiari tells its story. Inside the walls, steep alleys, archways and stone houses lead to the Palazzo Taglieschi museum and the Galleria Magiotti, a nineteenth century covered arcade.
Tip: every 29 June the Palio della Vittoria, a running race uphill along the straight road, commemorates the battle; Anghiari is also known for its furniture restorers and weaving workshops.
