D'Annunzio's Birthplace

The house of the Vate in the heart of old Pescara

In the heart of old Pescara, the historic district on the south bank of the river, along Corso Manthonè, stands the house where on 12 March 1863 Gabriele D'Annunzio was born, the poet, novelist, playwright, soldier and adventurer who dominated Italian culture and public life between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, nicknamed "il Vate", the prophet-poet. The house, a bourgeois residence of the eighteenth century belonging to his family, is now a museum, the Museo Casa Natale di Gabriele D'Annunzio, which reconstructs the environments of his childhood with original furniture, family portraits, photographs, manuscripts, letters and objects, telling the story of his family and his deep bond with his native Abruzzo, which inspired many of his works, from "Terra vergine" to "La figlia di Iorio".

In the room where he was born, a plaque recalls the event, and the house also preserves the clothes and personal objects of the poet, as well as memories of his mother, Luisa de Benedictis, to whom he was very attached. Old Pescara, which was once the separate town of Pescara, while the north bank was Castellammare Adriatico, until the two were united in 1927, is today a lively district full of restaurants, bars and nightlife, along Corso Manthonè. Pescara is also the hometown of the writer and screenwriter Ennio Flaiano, collaborator of Federico Fellini, and is a modern city with a long beach, the Ponte del Mare, a cycle and pedestrian bridge over the river mouth, and a lively seafront.

Tip: visit the house in the morning, then have lunch in one of the restaurants of Corso Manthonè; in the evening, enjoy its nightlife.
