Costa Rei

Kilometres of white sand in the Sarrabus

On the south-eastern coast of Sardinia, in the municipality of Muravera and Castiadas, in the region of the Sarrabus, Costa Rei is one of the longest stretches of beach on the island: about ten kilometres of fine, white sand, facing a sea of crystal-clear water, with colours ranging from turquoise to deep blue. Behind the beach stretch dunes, Mediterranean scrub and holiday villages, and in the background rise the granite mountains of the Sette Fratelli.

The coast is a succession of beaches and coves of great beauty: Cala Sinzias, a wide bay of white sand at the southern end, backed by a eucalyptus forest; Scoglio di Peppino, with its pink granite rocks emerging from the water; Santa Giusta; Piscina Rei; Cala Pira, dominated by a Spanish tower; and further north, the Is Scogliu de Peppinu. Just inland, the stretch between Costa Rei and Muravera has some of the most important nuragic and prehistoric sites of the area, such as the Piscina Rei menhirs, a group of about fifty standing stones. Near Castiadas, the old penal colony, an agricultural prison of the nineteenth century, can be visited. Costa Rei is quieter than other Sardinian resorts and ideal for families.

Tip: the sea is often calm here when the mistral blows on the west coast; try the "malloreddus" and the local citrus fruit, the Sarrabus oranges.
