The marine protected area and Porto Giunco
At the south-eastern tip of Sardinia, about 50 kilometres from Cagliari, Villasimius is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the island, surrounded by a coastline of granite rocks, white beaches and a sea of extraordinary transparency, protected by the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area, one of the largest in Italy. The area includes the cape, a promontory with a lighthouse, the island of Serpentara, with a Spanish tower, and the Isola dei Cavoli, with a lighthouse and an underwater statue of the Madonna del Naufrago at a depth of ten metres, visited by divers.
The most famous beach is Porto Giunco, a long strip of white sand dominated by a sixteenth century Spanish watchtower, the Torre di Porto Giunco: from the top of the hill the view embraces the beach on one side, with the sea of incredible colours, and the Stagno di Notteri, a lagoon behind it frequented by flamingos, on the other, two waters side by side, one turquoise and one pink. Other beautiful beaches are Punta Molentis, a narrow headland with two coves, Cala Giunco, Simius, Campulongu and Timi Ama. The sea floor, with Posidonia meadows, rocks and shipwrecks, is a paradise for snorkelling and diving.
Tip: access to Punta Molentis is limited in summer and requires booking; the walk to the Porto Giunco tower at sunset is unforgettable.
