A village of stone houses spiralling around a hill in the Madonie
Gangi, in the heart of the Madonie mountains, is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: its stone houses climb in concentric rings around the slopes of Monte Marone, forming a compact, honey-coloured pyramid that changes colour with the light. In 2014 it was voted "Borgo dei Borghi", Italy's favourite village.
At the top stand the Torre dei Ventimiglia and the church of San Nicolò, whose crypt holds the mummified bodies of priests, in a style similar to the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo. The Palazzo Bongiorno has eighteenth century frescoes, and the village was home to the painter known as "lo Zoppo di Gangi". In 2014 the town also became famous for offering abandoned houses for one euro.
Tip: in August the Sagra della Spiga celebrates the wheat harvest with a parade in costume; try the local pecorino and the provola delle Madonie.
