The belvedere of Sicily, from the highest provincial capital in Italy
At almost 1,000 metres, Enna is the highest provincial capital in Italy, perched on a plateau in the centre of the island. Its strategic position made it a fortress for Sicans, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans, and earned it the nickname "belvedere of Sicily".
At the eastern end of the town stands the Castello di Lombardia, one of the largest medieval castles in Italy, with three courtyards and six surviving towers out of twenty. From the top of the Torre Pisana the view embraces the whole island, from Etna to the Madonie and, on clear days, almost to the sea. Nearby, the Rocca di Cerere marks the site of the temple of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, whose daughter Persephone, according to myth, was carried off by Hades near Lake Pergusa.
Tip: in the town centre, the cathedral and the octagonal Tower of Frederick II are worth seeing; at Easter the hooded confraternities of Enna hold one of the most impressive processions in Sicily.
