The Grotta del Vento

Underground lakes, chasms and alabaster in the Apuan Alps

Hidden in the Turrite Secca valley, in the Garfagnana area, the Grotta del Vento owes its name to the strong current of air that blows from its mouth, cold in summer and warm in winter, caused by the different temperature between inside and outside. For centuries the locals used it as a natural refrigerator.

The cave is one of the most complete in Europe for the variety of its environments. Three guided itineraries, from one to three hours, lead past stalactites and stalagmites, alabaster draperies, underground lakes, a river and deep vertical shafts, explaining the geology of the Apuan Alps. The temperature inside is a constant 10.7°C.

Tip: bring a jacket even in August; the longest tour is quite demanding but unforgettable. The road up the valley passes the village of Fornovolasco.
